Participant funding supports public participation in development impact assessments undertaken by the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) in accordance with both the Nunavut Agreement and the Nunavut Planning and Project Assessment Act (NuPPAA). When participant funding is made available, it is administered by the federal department of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC).

Funding may be made available to individuals, Indigenous organizations, and incorporated not-for-profit organizations interested in participating in the assessment. The funding can cover eligible expenses, such as travel costs and fees for experts to support participation. Applications for funding must be prepared in accordance with the Participant Funding Guide and Participant Funding Application provided by CIRNAC for the assessment.

A funding review committee independent of the NIRB will consider all applications and recommend allocation of funds to applicants according to specified eligibility criteria. All successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement with CIRNAC, under which expenditures may be subject to audit.
