The Meadowbank Gold Mine Project was assessed by the NIRB from 2003 � 2006. It was approved to proceed on December 30, 2006 subject to the terms and conditions of Project Certificate No. 004. This project dashboard contains the original assessment information as well as monitoring information through to the approval of an amended Project Certificate associated with the Amendment to Condition 32 � All-Weather Access Road in 2009.



Modified from the 2005 Project Description: The Meadowbank Gold Mine Project (the �Project�) involves the construction and operation of an open pit gold mine located in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, approximately 70 kilometres (km) north of the Hamlet of Baker Lake on Inuit-owned surface lands. The Meadowbank Gold Mine is planned to have a 12-year project life (2 years of construction, 8 years of operations, and 2 years of closure and post-closure activities), and anticipates the creation of up to 310 direct jobs through construction, and 370 jobs through operations. The Project is planned as a �fly-in/fly-out� operation with personnel rotating every several weeks. Access to the site for re-supply of materials and goods will be via a 115 km all-weather road.



The Project will include three open pits, called Portage, Vault and Goose Island to mine the estimated 2.77 million ounces of gold reserves. Water management infrastructure such as dikes and diversion channels will be utilized to dewater the pit areas following a fish-out program. Project components will include additional water management infrastructure; waste rock storage facilities, and a tailings storage area. The following on-site infrastructure is proposed to support mining activities: ore-processing plant; power plant; fuel tank farm; explosives storage area; airstrip; haul and service roads; water treatment plant; incinerators; sewage treatment facility; maintenance facility; and accommodations and camp facilities for up to 250 personnel. The Project will also include infrastructure located approximately two (2) km east of the Hamlet of Baker Lake consisting of barge unloading facilities, a storage laydown area, and fuel tank farm. Supplies will be shipped seasonally directly to the Baker Lake facility via barge.
