Project Summary
Although it is clear that land species of plants and animals came to Greenland from Canada, we don’t fully know when and in what order they did so. Previous studies also suggest that several species may have disappeared and subsequently re-entered from Canada multiple times. Moreover, it is unclear what consequences these past events have had for the current ecosystems on Greenland. The objective of this project is to find out when and in what order species entered into Greenland from Canada, and how this timing and order have influenced the ecosystems we have today. Our field will rely on the Swedish icebreaker Oden, who will be working in the area of Nares straight for a research expedition organized by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat. We will fly with a helicopter from Oden to a series of study sites on Greenland, and to three sites on northern Ellesmere Island. Our field work will take place during August and early September. On each site, we will collect lake sediment cores, count and collect terrestrial arthropods such as insects and spiders, and count plants. We will also collect fecal droppings, bone, teeth, hair and feathers that we may encounter on the ground. These will be used both for genetic analyses and to study what the animals have eaten. Our field activities will be carried out in small teams and over short time periods. They will have almost no impact on the local environment or wildlife, or on any Nunavut residents. Data will be stored at the Centre for Palaeogenetics and at the Department of Zoology, Stockholm University. Once we have published data in scientific journals, we will also release the associated data for public use. All collected samples will be stored at the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Our study area is very remote and involves complicated logistics including a Swedish icebreaker. We will therefore have no abilities to directly include any Nunavut residents in our field activities. Furthermore, there are no traditional Inuit communities close to our study site, although we will work relatively close to Alert. However, we will keep relevant communities informed about our activities, and we are committed to conduct our research in a way that respects indigenous knowledge and traditions. Upon completion of the expedition, we will put together an initial project report from the field work. This will likely not include any results, but only a summary of conducted field activities. This will be shared with local communities on Ellesmere Island, as well as with the regional government of Nunavut. Once results are published, these will also be distributed. We will also initiate a discussion about producing a series of informative posters, highlighting the results form the study. We would like to point out, however, that since a lot of laboratory analyses are required before we will have final results, this can take time, most likely 1 to 3 years after completed field work.
