Project Summary
Arctic Haven Overlay Project Company / Applicant: Aziz Kheraj, 994458 Nunavut Limited Land use type: Tourism Activities, Airport, and Tourism Activities Regions: KivalliqPlanning Regions: KeewatinEmail: azizkheraj@gmail.comPhone: 1-(867)-252-3838?Address: House 112, Box 300, Resolute Bay X0A 0V0Project description: Arctic Haven Lodge is located on Ennadai Lake. The lodge is an arctic wildlife-viewing based adventure lodge. (https://www.weberarctic.com) The lodge supports up to 20 guests a week from all over the world. The only mode of transportation in and out of the lodge is by aircraft from Yellowknife. The lodge has a 3200ft gravel airstrip. To facilitate and accommodate our seasonal lodge operations along with the aircraft charter company regulations, we are in need of extending the overall length of the airstrip by 800 feet. The extension of the airstrip will on the northwest end of the current airstrip. See attached image. The project will be undertaken over several seasons. The gravel needed for this work is about 500 cubic meters. Currently the northwest end of the airstrip is at a much higher level than then the southeast end. We will be effectively levelling the airstrip and using the excess material to extend the airstrip. We will not need to displace material from a different location other then the current airstrip. The equipment used for the project is already on location at Arctic Haven. We will be using a dump truck, bulldozer, small excavator and compactor to transport and move the material. We are not aware of any short or long term environmental implications by this project. The material being displaced is sand and light gravel. The location of the proposed extension is already cleared of trees and brush from when the original construction of the airstrip back in the year 2000. No water sources are being redirected or displaced for this project. No new roads or gravel quarry will be made for the purpose of moving material. All the work roads are performed on the existing airstrip and lodge roads. As Arctic Haven Lodge is wildlife based viewing lodge it is essential for the nature of business that the flora and fauna remains intact and the landscape is disrupted to a minimal. No new lodge infrastructure will be need to house the workers.Proposed dates for multi-year construction phase: 2021-06-01 - 2025-10-15Operational season: June 1st - September 15th Workers on site: 6 people for approximately 75 days *See image below for more details on location
