Nordgold (Northquest Ltd), has been exploring in the Whale Cove area of the Kivalliq region of Nunavut since around 2011. Currently, all exploration activities have taken place at a temporary campsite is located at 62˚21” 05.2’ N, 92˚ 45” 19.7’W. The current camp site is less than ideal for exploration in the winter months as it gets completely buried in snow due to its location. In addition, the lake from which the camp gets its water is shallow and freezes to the bottom in winter.Nordgold is proposing and has the authorization of the Hamlet of Whale Cove, to move the temporary camp to a more suitable location closer to the Hamlet. The location was chosen in consultation with the Hamlet as well as the Issatik Hunters and Trappers Organization. After considering several different options for a new camp site, a new site has been chosen approximately 4.2km west of the current site. The proposed new site is 300-400m northwest of and downslope from an old, abandoned trailer near the main road, approximately 22km from town.Water will be drawn from the fish-bearing lake approximately 550m northwest from the old, abandoned trailer. The new camp site was selected because it is considerably closer to the Vickers Gold Deposit, and it will allow the company to operate year-round. Moving the camp is also more cost effective than building a new camp. It is hoped that the camp construction will begin later this year with the building of floors for the new buildings. The construction will be completed, and the remainder of the camp will be moved next summer. The camp will generally be in a similar layout to the previous camp. The camp will consist of several aluminium framed “Weather Haven” 14’ by 16’ tents on plywood floors, as well as a new plywood kitchen, plywood shower/laundry tent, plywood core logging tent. The new camp will be able to accommodate up to 35 people. Pacto toilets will be used at the new camp, and solid waste will be incinerated. Exploration based out of the camp generally consists of prospecting, till sampling, geophysical surveys, mapping, and diamond drilling.In a recent inspection of the area of the proposed camp it was noted that there are possible archaeological sites (rock circles) in the camp vicinity. Discussions are underway with a certified archaeologist to visit the site and advise on the significance of these sites, and, if possible, carry out site mitigation.The old camp site will be cleaned up and restored to its original condition. Historic drill core currently stored at the old camp site will remain in its current location.
