We go to Prince Leopold Island (Siqiniq) MBS and collect eggs of northern fulmars, thick-billed murres, black-legged kittiwakes and glaucous gulls regularly, to track levels of contaminants in the marine environment. These contaminants include human-made chemicals, pollution from oil and gas, mercury, and now plastic pollution. Every decade (including 2023) we also collect adult birds (kittiwakes, murres, fulmars) to examine them for health issues, including consumption of plastics. In some years we also attach tracking devices to a few birds so we can learn where they spend their time on the ocean, where they may be eating contaminants, and for how long they stay in these areas. We were last at Siqiniq (PLI) in 2019; the community of Resolute Bay wanted us to give the birds a break from disturbance, and the COVID-19 pandemic hit, so these two factors have meant we have left the birds alone for 3 years. However, it is very important for us to get back now, as we know from some other sites that there are increasing concerns over plastic pollution and oil-related contaminants (from shipping) in seabirds in Arctic Canada. Siqiniq (PLI) is a critical place for us to sample, because the history of work there makes it the longest running contaminant monitoring at any site in Nunavut, initiated in 1975, and forms a critical base of the Northern Contaminants Program.
