Project Summary
The Hamlet of Kinngait (the Hamlet), with the support of the Government of Nunavut (GN), Economic Development and Transportation (EDT), has obtained funding from Transport Canada (TC) under the Oceans Protection Plan (OPP) Program for improvements to sealift safety and security (the Project). The Hamlet has engaged the Qikiqtaaluk Business Development (QBDC), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Qikiqtaaluk Corporation (QC), the development arm of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), to manage the Project on behalf of the Hamlet. Worley Canada Services Ltd. (Advisian) and Pilitak Enterprises (the Contractor) have been retained to design and construct the improvements. The Project includes the construction of a new sealift laydown area and barge ramp at the site of the existing sealift facilities. An existing quarry that is within the Hamlet and located east of the airport runway will be used for the Project. Construction is anticipated to start at the end of May 2024 and be completed by the end of the 2024 open-water season. Consultations with the Hamlet, the Aiviq Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO), sealift carriers, the local QC fisheries representative, and residents, as well as briefings to the QIA, have been ongoing since a planning study was completed in early 2020. Community and stakeholder engagement will continue throughout the Project until its completion. Letters of support from the community are attached.
