Silverback Films is one of the world’s leading natural history television companies. Our documentary series are watched by hundreds of millions of people and broadcast in 190 countries across the world. We would like to have the opportunity to celebrate the wildlife of Mittimatalik area and work with the Pond Inlet community to help film the story of the narwhal. The footage would form part of a television series about the Arctic which will be broadcast on a major global streaming service. Our plan is to film at the floe edge from the air using a helicopter rigged with a camera system. We would also film from the ice using lightweight drones and a tripod-based camera. The helicopter would land on ice to allow us to do this. Our filming crew consists of one cinematographer and one producer - both are extremely experienced in working in remote environments. Collectively, they have years of experience in working in Arctic environments. They will be supported in the field by Inuit guide Abraham Kunnuk and David Reid - a polar explorer with decades of experience of leading film crews in the polar regions. We are committed to reducing any possible interference with hunters and the sustainable narwhal harvest in Eclipse Sound. Therefore, we are proposing to start filming after the 5th July when the floe edge will likely be closed to hunters. We have strict protocols on minimising disturbance to narwhal when working from a helicopter including setting fixed separation distances and approach speeds. We would look to place a fuel cache of around 15-20 barrels of fuel at one of two locations in Navy Board Inlet (outlined in the application) to enable helicopter flying in that area. We will put the fuel cache in by snowmobile in May and extract the empty drums by boat in August (if this is not possible we would like to reserve the right to use a Twin Otter to do this work). The caching work will be organised through an Inuit outfitter in Pond Inlet (Tagak Outfitting). We also have strict rules to ensure safe fuel caching. Please see “Impacts” for more details. We are committed to employing local people on our team and to providing training to local community members. We have approached Ikaarvik for their help in facilitating a drone flying workshop led by one of our award-winning aerial cinematographers. Silverback Films will ensure that we have all the necessary permits. We are in touch with the Department of Environment for our Wildlife Observation License, the DFO for authorisation of marine mammal disturbance, and the CWS for working within the Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary. We have submitted an application to the QIA. We are also in touch with the Nunavut Film Development Corporation.
