Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut, Municipal Works is applying to amend the water license 3BM-RES2025 on behalf of the Municipality of Resolute Bay. The new water license will include a newly constructed solid waste facility which will provide the community with a suitable waste site, significantly improve operations, including health and safety, and to meet the needs of the community while bringing operations in line with regulatory compliance. A business case for the new landfill has been completed, which the recommendations of will be taken into detailed design of the facility. Originally, the existing solid waste facility was intended to be upgraded, but after the development of the business case, it was determined that a new facility would be constructed. The previously used solid waste facility will be closed, and the waste will be consolidated to the new facility, however, the old metal waste site will be available to the Municipality for material laydown needs. The new facility will have improved lighting, proper water migration reduction strategies, and containment fencing of the facility to restrict unauthorized access. The site will also feature the addition of a leachate pond with several divertible waste areas to separate solid, combustible and hazardous waste, including an area where Municipal waste is covered to prevent interaction with local wildlife. Finally, a new access road will be constructed to reach the facility. Construction is expected to commence in 2026 and completed in 2027.
