Project Summary
Why – Currently in the Canadian Arctic there are low levels of shipping and oil exploration related activities as compared to many other regions. As there is expected to be an increase in vessel traffic throughout Nunavut in the coming decades, there is a need to assess the current levels of oil-related contaminants exposure in marine species, and the potential effects. There are also emerging concerns about Avian Influenza in Nunavut, and the potential effects on bird populations. While detections of the virus in birds in Nunavut have been very low, by testing the antibodies to this virus in the eggs has been shown to be an effective way to understand what species and colonies have been exposed to the virus, but have been able to build some immunity. What we want to do – We would like to work with local hunters that can collect approximately 15 eggs from each species in the identified region. Species will be selected for these collections with partners to ensure they are relevant to local concerns around oil pollution. The eggs will be collected by local partners in each region when possible and keep cool until they can be shipped to the National Wildlife Research Center in Ottawa for processing. We will test all the eggs collected for oil-related contaminants and avian influenza antibodies. These results will be communicated back to the community partners, and compared across regions in Canada to understand large scale spatial patterns in both oil pollution and avian influenza. Where - Ideally we would do these collections in locations as consulted by the community, therefore the work may take place within the protected areas (where there are permits in place) and outside. Potential concerns/questions – All eggs will be collected with hunters. Only one egg from each nest will be collected in order to reduce the effects on the breeding population.
