Plastic pollution is one of the primary concerns for the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP). Large litter debris can harm wildlife through ingestion or entanglement, affecting a range of animals such as whales, fish, and birds. As shipping, fishing and general traffic increases in the Arctic, it is important to understand what kind of plastic and other human-derived debris is littering the shorelines of Nunavut. Knowing the sources of litter pollution is crucial in the future mitigation of this issue. Through the Inuit Qaujisarnirmut Pilirijjutit on Arctic Shipping Risks in Inuit Nunangat, we’ve partnered with collaborators in Pond Inlet, Iqaluit and Arviat to assess shoreline litter through quick and simple litter counts. The current phase of the work expands the current work to include a more detailed analyses of the potential sources of plastic pollution in Nunavut, and collect data that is harmonized with other regions in the Pan-Arctic to increase comparability in the litter across the region. We are also working to both include partners from Cambridge Bay, and several communities in the NWT, expanding our scope to give a better sense of marine litter from across Inuit Nunangat, as well as to implement a more detailed debris count that would involve collecting all litter found.
