Project Summary
This project is part of the Coastal Environmental Baseline Program, which is a federally mandated monitoring program that collects coastal marine baseline data. The overall objective of this project is to collect data on ecosystem components of inner Frobisher Bay. This work will focus on collecting temporal and spatial information regarding biodiversity of sea-ice algae, phytoplankton, and zooplankton in Tarr Inlet, Koojesse Inlet and Peterhead Inlet, near Iqaluit, NU. Sea Ice and Open-Water Sampling: Sampling in 2025 will take place from April until November. Sampling will occur 1-2 times per month at 3 locations in and near Koojesse Inlet and Tarr Inlet and 2 additional locations in Peterhead Inlet. During the ice break up (likely mid-June) we plan to conduct some additional sampling along at an ice crack station in Koojesse Inlet, near Iqaluit, Nunavut. Sea ice samples will be collected with an ice corer (MARK II coring system, Kovacs Ice Drilling Equipment). Water samples will be collected with Niskin bottles. Zooplankton will be collected with vertical zooplankton nets. Amphipods will also be collected by hand nets and/or amphipod traps. Some complementary monthly benthic invertebrate samples will be collected using a grab sampler (Ekman or Van Veen) and by hand. Vertical CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth; Castaway CTD, Sontek & RBR CTD) profiles will be recorded at each sampling site. Basic weather data and measurements of ice and snow thickness will also be recorded. This type of sampling will have minimal impact on the immediate environment. Sampling holes will be filled upon completion of sampling.
