Project Summary
The Government of Nunavut, Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, is proposing this work as part of planning for upgrades to the municipality’s drinking water system. The proposed work is a small, temporary fisheries study at the municipality’s current drinking water source. The study will help determine how the source can continue to support the community’s drinking water needs while protecting fish and fish habitat.A small field crew will collect information on fish species presence and relative abundance. Sampling will use non-lethal methods, such as trap nets and electrofishing. Angling may also be used if needed, with barbless hooks and minimal fish handling. All captured fish will be identified, measured, weighed, and released alive. No permanent facilities will be built. Access may be by truck, ATV, boat, or on foot, depending on site conditions. The results will support the water licence renewal process and future drinking water system upgrades. The long-term goal is to support a safe and reliable drinking water supply while avoiding or minimizing impacts to fish and fish habitat. The work will take place at or near the existing drinking water source, close to the community, and is not expected to occur in a protected area. Field work is expected to occur during the open-water season and will be completed over a short period, depending on weather and site conditions.
