How can I submit comments?
Every NIRB screening has a public comment period of up to 21 days. When a screening is initiated, a public notice is issued to an email distribution list consisting of potentially affected communities, designated Inuit organizations, government officials and other interested parties. Parties are invited to submit their comments regarding the proposed project and its potential effects to the NIRB for consideration. All comments made during an assessment are posted to the NIRB online registry and can be viewed by the public. Comments can also be submitted at any time for Active Reviews and Active Monitoring Programs and will be address in due course by the NIRB.
There are five ways to submit comments to the NIRB:
- Fill out a comment form on the Public Registry (see guide below for more info)
- Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your comments
- Call the NIRB’s toll-free number: 1-866-233-3033
- Send your comments to the NIRB by fax: 1-867-983-2594
- Fill out a paper comment form at one of the NIRB’s public meetings and give it to a member of the NIRB staff
How to submit a comment on the NIRB’s Public Registry
Step 1: Go to the sign in box at the top of the page and sign in to your account. If you don’t have an account, create one by clicking on Register for an Account.
Step 2: Click on the Public Registry button found below the sign in box.
Step 3: Search for the project that you would like to follow. This can be done by entering the project name or number into the search box (note: the project name must be spelled correctly. Typing in the project number such as “17SN034” will provide the most accurate search results). You can narrow your search using the advanced search options provided below the search box.
Step 4: Choose the project you are looking for from the list of search results. Click on the underlined title. Alternatively, if you know the location of the project you are looking for, you can select the project on the map and then click on the file number found in the box that appears at the top right corner of the map.
Step 5: You are now on the file’s “Project Dashboard”. To submit a comment for this file, click on the “Comment Form” button found at the top right of the page.
Step 6: This will bring you to the Electronic Comment Form. You have the choice to fill out the form displayed on the screen or to upload a document with your comments. Once you have filled in all the boxes or have uploaded your own document, be sure to click “Submit.”
